Poisons on the Path, are the conditions within or the enemies that surround one’s striving. Such concepts are Accidie, described as a state of listlessness, apathy, or spiritual sloth. While often equated with laziness in modern contexts, historically it was a more profound, destructive, and all-encompassing emotional crisis. A gnostic term is the hylic, one nearly incapable of spiritual pursuits; a Buddhist term is the icchantika, one with no connections or desire to the Dharma. Kausidya is translated directly as “spiritual sloth,” this term is a type of laziness toward virtuous activity. A person with kausidya might be high-achieving in life but remains entirely lethargic regarding spiritual cultivation. Thina-middha, known as “sloth and torpor,” this is one of the Five Hindrances to meditation. It represents a “sickness of consciousness” where the mind becomes heavy, dull, and incapable of perceiving reality or spiritual truth. These are the poisons and obstacles to the True Heroes.
